COMPACT, AUDIO METERING UNIT

What is a PPM?

(See also Pico Program Meter, miniature STEREO PPM)

The MURRAYPRO PPM-6 provides high quality, multi-function, 4 channel audio monitoring facilities in a compact unit only 1U high. Designed to be mounted close to the picture monitor for audio level monitoring in non-linear Editing applications, PPM-6 will also suit many other applications where space is at a premium. The self-contained PPM-6 provides physical A1, A2, A3, A4 Peak Programme Metering, M&S level monitoring, overload indication, dual stereo phase verification and audio presence confirmation simultaneously, without cluttering the video display monitor in any way!

PEAK PROGRAMME METERING

PPM monitoring is provided on six illuminated miniature meters. True PPM scaling together with the classic fast attack and slow decay times are ensured by the full specification precision meter drive amplifiers. The miniature movements that are fitted in this 1 U height have a very slightly relaxed specification, boast a surprisingly large 42 x 20 mm scale and closely emulate the full-sized BS 6840 meters. Internal, ultra bright, LED illumination is provided to ensure full visibility under all operational conditions.

VU meter option

The monitor is also available, to special order, fitted with VU meters. The VU meters are calibrated so that the standard Reference level 0dBU,=0.775V RMS, is displayed as -4VU. The +4dB operating level is displayed as 0VU. The peak LEDs are set to trigger at +8dBU=+4VU, see following text for more detail.

INPUT MONITORING

PPM-6 is configured so the A1, A2, A3, A4 input signals are displayed on the respective left hand meters.

"M & S" MONITORING

Mix and Separation meter monitoring, switch selected from either A1 & A2, or A3 & A4 input pairs, is available on the right hand panel meters. Optionally the displayed M signals may be increased in level by 3dB, in accordance with BBC preferences, by adjustment of two further internal links.

PEAK LEVEL INDICATOR

Four independent red LEDs indicate peak input signal levels in excess of +8.15dBU (+0.15dB) for each channel. These LEDs conform with the full PPM specification, and are not subject to the ballistic considerations of meter movements.

PHASE VERIFICATION

Correct A1:A2 & A3:A4 phasing is indicated by green illumination of the phase indicator. Incorrect phasingof either channel pair is immediately obvious as the respective PPM-6 phase indicator changes colour to red. The phase indication is extremely reliable, and is vital in an editing environment, where the highly visual GO~~NO-GO indicators provide this vital information instantly, preventing expensive mistakes which may only become apparent much later!

AUDIO PRESENCE CONFIRMATION

Audio presence is visually indicated by illumination of the stereo phase LEDs, in either colour, and is particularly useful when the LS volume may be reduced. The phase indicator(s) extinguish when both A1 and A2 signals (A3 and A4) are below -20dBV.7, preventing nuisance triggering on very low level signals.

AUDIO INPUTS

Audio inputs are provided on locking XLR-3 connectors. A pair of balanced, high impedance, looping (female-male) connectors for each input, ensures that interfacing with the PPM-6 is particularly easy.

AES Audio is available as an option, using our compact demodulator card.

M & S MATRIX: UTILITY OUTPUTS

Utility, balanced, line level outputs of the derived M & S channels are provided on the rear panel. It may be of interest to note that the matrix, which has a nominal balance of >40dB, is dual function, and will convert an M & S signal input on A1 & A2 connectors back to L & R on the M & S output XLR-3 connectors!

POWER

PPM-6 requires approximately 4VA. Configured to run from 230v supplies, mains power is supplied via an IEC connector fused at 63mA T. 110 v operation to special order.

PHYSICAL

The rack width PPM-6 is only 1U high and 150mm deep. Weight is less than 1.5 KGm. PPM-6 conforms with the CE marking requirements.
